This is a translation of “Wer hat Angst vor Wikileaks?” by Mario Sixtus done by me with a little help from the Google translator toolkit. I apologize for some sentences that might be too long for a proper english translation. I also added some links. I don’t claim any ownership of the original text.

There’s always something going on about Wikileaks. There is always something to report about the Whistleblower portal or Julian Assange, its eccentric founder. Today, for example Assange was heard before a London court. Reporters on site hacked facts and fact-lets into their keyboards, TV cameras were filming Assange’s almost-new hairstyle and numerous texts sprouted on the Web, all of which circulated around the terms “rape” and “conspiracy”.

Wikileaks in reality is totally unimportant, and the stories of allegedly deliberately bursting condoms or about sexual intercourse in deep sleep are useful for yellow press headlines at most. It wasn’t Wikileaks and its previously white-haired Australian who, through its relevations, deeply humiliated the U.S. and put it into a brilliant oscillation between helplessness and actionism, no, it was the Internet.

Even if the U.S., tomorrow morning, chained up and incarcerated Julian Assange at Guantanamo, crippled the Wikileaks servers using Stuxnet II and monitored Wikileaks’ 640 000 Twitter followers around the clock by each its own CIA agents, it would not help: Since information has freed itself from its host material body, it can not be held on to anymore. A lesson that the music and movie industries had to learn painfully and which now suddenly is on the curriculum of powerful statesmen. While it currently looks like, the latter try to surpass the former in terms of failing to get a clue.

Anyone who has information that another one wants to keep secret, can carry it on a USB stick into any given internet cafe in any place where they upload it to a Kyrgyz one-click-hosting provider, run the address through a lybian URL shortener and send the link using a Mail.ru account to the international top 100 Twitterers, and then settle back watching how the information bomb ignites. And there is just one way this scenario can be shut out from the realm of possibilities: switch off the Internet.

Of course it is legitimate to discuss the moral, ethical and political implications of the phenomenon Wikileaks, as is currently happening in the feuilletons, but it is also futile. To get riled about the alleged irresponsibility of Wikileaks is about as pointless as cursing to the rain that it is raining. Free, transient, accessible information falls into the sphere of environmental conditions nowadays. They come over us like a cold wave which you can curse (German Railways) or cheer (manufacturer of long johns). To get excited about it and find the weather immoral because of its impertinence is, however, of pretty much no help against the cold.

Similarly, as the music industry believed at the time, that they had to only kill napster in order to to finally be able to continue as before, nowadays politics takes an annoyed look at Wikileaks and hopes – depending of political flavour secretly or openly – this Australian freak and his strange Wiki-thing may please disappear to whence they came, so they could go back again to cozy back-room politics like, back then, in the 20th century. The music industry erstwhile hunted down Napster, but file sharing really went off subsequently. In the case of Wikileaks there will be no difference.

There are several reasons why the current debate is not effective; the most important: the wrong questions are being asked. The wrongest is: How can you protect yourself from Wikileaks. The most bizarre outcome of this question so far: The Strategy of the U.S. government against leaks recently leaked into the public – without any help from Wikileaks. The desire to want to retain information acts like a clown act more and more.

A much more intelligent question would be: How should governments, businesses, institutions adjust themselves so that they can survive in an environment where information is simultaneously as ephemeral and ubiquitous as oxygen molecules? A clue in which direction an answer could aim is brought to us by Julian Assange himself, who wrote in the year of 2006:

“Hence in a world where leaking is easy, secretive or unjust systems are nonlinearly hit relative to open, just systems.”

Now, one may think of Assange what you want: With this assessment, he is unquestionably right. Institutions that build their existence on secrecy and half-truths have to tremble more about revelations than such that act openly and transparently. Governments that work in the interest of their citizens and make the bases of their decision processes public do not need to fear revelations; those who let lobbyists draft up laws or those whose party funds are more important than the state budget, do.

A state has no privacy, it has no right to secrecy. It has sole responsibility to its citizens and the default status for government information should read “open”.

Whether toll contracts, Love Parade investigation or S21-decision process: transparency in German politics is rarely desired by the leaders. The political class will have to forget about this arrogance if it wants to survive.

The music industry had to come to terms with free-circulating audio tracks and to finally grudgingly agree with Apple on a distribution deal to avoid being kicked out of the game entirely.

Governments will have to get used to freely swirling information, whether reluctantly or stamping their foot. To trade a law for a post is becoming increasingly difficult.

But there is also good news for government leaders: They will not have to sit down together and agree with Julian Assange, Wikileaks, Apple or anyone else, but only with their citizens.

The new information environment, which we owe to the Internet, is an enormous opportunity for democracy. That can at best lead to push social evolution, to a forced rapprochement between government and governed. For this clue into the future we can all be grateful to Wikileaks.

Of course we can talk about Assange’s hearing before a London court, about burst condoms and sexual intercourse during deep sleep. And we can pretend that we had to deal with a weather phenomenon and not a climate change.

I spent most of this sunday thinking about mobile computing, where it is right now and what may happen.

Around 2002 I first became interested in the whole mobile computing idea. My favourite mind game for that topic is a “city walk”, an application in tourism. You visit another place and want to learn about how it came to where/how it is today. So, for my hometown, you could think of a tour with lots of pictures from Deutsche Fotothek (would be very interesting to see this and the present place), maybe an audio guide as well. Current mobile technology back in 2002 was the Sharp Zaurus, the iPaq and similar pda’s.

So, what if you could have something that is able to display photos (or even videos), that knows where it is, where it points and has access to storage media (internal or via some wireless network)? That was what I thought about eight years ago. That was two years after the EUR 50bn 3G auction in Germany (EUR 600 per resident!) and two years before an actual 3g phone hit the local market.

Fast forward 8 years. We have (or are promised) a device that has a usable (multi)touch screen, decent performance, wireless+3g networking, (a)gps, a compass, accelerometers, access to peripherals (via bluetooth) and some reasonable storage. The platform even has a working developer ecosystem, very good user interface standards, and a software distribution channel.

And that thing even has a large enough screen to make it possible to implement that idea, without having to design any custom hardware at all. Yes, it is pricey. Yes, I think the price will come down at some point. No, it won’t be soon, assuming the competition remains that bad.

Competition: That would be Microsoft and the various hardware vendors out there. They do not have anything comparable to the apple tablet. Even if there was some comparable hardware, the lack of a decent software platform to base it on would be a showstopper. Windows on a tablet for grandpa? Linux on a tablet for grandpa?

Sidenote: I think this grandpa idea should not be underestimated. Something larger than a flimsy iphone that comes with “built in internet” and is actually usable by that generation? Just check the prices for picture frames with wireless access and no touch. See?

Then we have the small/internet tablet market, like the the Nokia N900. Look at this screenshot. Need I say more? I do not want to bash open source here. Ever tried getting (or even purchasing) some software for your N-Series phone? Oh wait, this is turning into a phone rant now.

So yeah. The iPad will kick ass. Will I buy one? Probably not this year. But I guess I will replace my old N73 with something that seems to have a future in the market, broad developer support and great usability.

I wrote this with reasonable distance from the reality distortion field. I did not watch any keynotes and tried to avoid most of the media coverage out there. Oh, and if you look into the archives, you’ll find my november 2007 rant about the iphone (in German).

I did a little review of the decade. I checked my iTunes library for most played songs (this count is biased towards 2007 onwards, so it was just a minor guideline), read a couple of other decade reviews for inspiration — it’s been a long time since 2000 — and made up my mind on what should be included in here and what not. Rough guideline: Song has to be in my archives and released in the given decade. The years do not necessarily match the release dates of the songs. So here we go. Have your flashblocker ready. Back in time, towards

2000

I am in the last years of highschool (Gymnasium, as the germans call it). We (a friend of mine, hey Fred! and me) celebrated our 18th Birthday (age of majority: driving! voting! liquor!) by hauling two dozens of beer cases to our local watering hole using my parent’s VW Passat Wagon and having a great time with the guys that weekend. Including the mess that had to be cleaned up afterwards.

Other common things to do: Spend hours playing Counterstrike, Total Annihilation and other games; Spend afternoons at the lake, listening to the Pulp Fiction Soundtrack [different decade].

One of the songs that surprisingly survived to this day in my music library is DMX’s “Party Up”. Hearing the song brings back memories. I don’t particularly like the song but there it is.

Interestingly, Red Hot Chili Pepper’s “Californication”, which was popular during that time as well, seems to be timeless to me. It looks like they police their own video out of youtube, so this one has to do it.

There was not only DMX, there also was Eminem. Remember Stan?

2001

Not much in there, probably the same stuff as 2000 considering I was still in school or nearby. Graduated from school that year. Little anecdote? During the graduation ceremony, we got an envelope containing the certification. Mine just contained a note reading “You’ll get your certificate from the secretary office in exchange for the books you still need to return.”

Around that time I started using my PC as an alarm clock, with a playlist to wake me up. I usually get sick of the list after a couple of months, too lazy to change it regularly. That way this Moby song still reminds me of waking up in the old coal-heated apartment next to the school.

Oh, and there was 9/11. So that Enya song has to be in here. You couldn’t miss it back then. However, I could not find in in my library. So, first exception about that rule.

Conclusion

It is hard to pick favourites. Don’t make me pick. Why did I do that at all? When you start to dive into the vast amount of content that is out there, when you get lost in the myriads of videos on youtube then you’ll understand what I mean. Hobby psychologists, please start dissecting me now.

Also, it is pretty hard to not cross the line into “creepy autobiography”. Actually, I have a gut feeling I crossed it. You can see that developing during the post: At first there were whole paragraphs, later on I switched to bullet points.

Puhh, ein großer Brocken über den ich schon seit Ewigkeiten was schreiben will. Das hier ist nur der erste Teil einer kleinen Serie.

Das Blog hier existiert schon seit 5 Jahren, was in etwa auch die Zeitspanne ist, in der ich Feeds aktiv nutze. Es gibt in meinem Freundeskreis immer noch einige Leute, die keinen blassen Schimmer davon haben (ich laufe nicht den ganzen Tag durch die Gegend und versuche jeden von meinem Glauben zu überzeugen). Wenn die Serie fertig ist, kann ich notfalls hierauf verweisen und die Sache als abgehakt betrachten.

Achtung: Es folgt eine Einleitung, was denn dieses Feed-Zeugs ist. Ich versuche darzulegen, wo das Problem liegt und wie es gelöst wird. Kenner mögen bitte diesen trivialen Kram verzeihen.

Wenn ich mich morgens an den Rechner setze, wird natürlich erstmal nach der Email geschaut. Dort finden sich 3 Mails mit den neuesten KettenbriefenKatzenfotos, Youtube Videos von irgendwelchen Kumpels. Im Instant Messenger habe ich auch eine Flut von den Dingern. Als nächstes wird geguggt, was sich beim StasiVZ, bei Facebook, bei Flickr und auf den zwei Dutzend anderen Seiten getan hat, wo sich eine mir bekannte “Community” einfindet. Habe ich die Muse, surfe ich mal auf den Websites von den Kumpels und Kumpelinen herum — mal schaun ob sich da was neues getan hat. Dann gibt es noch die 5 Newssites, also die Tagesschau und ein paar Techniknews, wo ich nach dem rechten schaue.

Boah. Das ist doch verdammt viel Holz. Hast du denn kein Leben?

Doch. Der Computer erledigt für mich diesen ganzen komplizierten Kram — besucht die verschiedenen Websites, vergleicht was dort das letzte mal stand, jetzt dort steht und wirft mir eine Liste vor die Nase, die in etwa lautet:

Ich brauche mich also eben nicht mehr aktiv kümmern, mir die Neuigkeiten mühselig zusammensuchen sondern der Kram “fliegt mir zu”.

Technisch wird (ich möchte hier nicht in die Details gehen) das ganze mit sogenannten Feeds erledigt. Mit deren Hilfe können die rohen Informationen auf einer Website ohne den ganzen bunten Layout-Kram, ohne die vielen Navigationslinks, meisstens ohne den ganzen Werbekram maschinenlesbar abgerufen werden. Wenn man sich auf einer Website befindet, die einen solchen Feed anbietet, wird dies vom Browser durch ein kleines Symbol (oft orange, manchmal auch blau) angezeigt. Da kann man drauf klicken.

Es existieren Programme, die nun das Einsammeln der vielen Feeds übernehmen. Mein Tipp ist hier der Google Reader. Kleiner Hinweis an die Leute, die Angst haben dass Google nun wüsste was man so liest: Habt ihr Google Analytics schon geblockt? Nein? Gut. Dann braucht ihr euch keine Sorgen machen, denn: Google kennt euch schon und lacht sich tot. Auch wenn ihr Google.com meidet wie der Teufel das Weihwasser.

Wer einen Mac sein eigen nennt, kann alternativ auch NetNewsWire verwenden.

So, nun habe ich einen Hammer, wo sind die Nägel?

Gut. Dann abonniert zunächst mal das Blog hier. Dann wollt ihr vielleicht mal die Websites der Bekannt- und Verwandtschaft mal so abgrasen ob das Symbol da auch auftaucht. Die wissen meisstenteils selbst gar nicht dass sie sowas (Feeds) haben. Mal bei flickr oder picasa Bilder hochgeladen? Die haben auch Feeds für jeden Account, für Alben et cetera. Vielleicht noch bei der Tagesschau vorbei? Oder beim Spiegel? (sorry, bin heut faul beim verlinken).

Wir lernen? Ich kann einen Haufen Kram ohne herumstolpern auf zig Websites verfolgen. Was geht nicht? StudiVZ beispielsweise. Warum? Walled garden. Die bieten derlei Kram nicht an. Kram wäre hier Beispielsweise: Welche Bilder haben meine Leute neu hochgeladen? Wo haben sich Details bei meinen Kontakten geändert? et cetera. Auch Facebook hat mit dieser Art Export so seine Probleme. Ich bin daher kein Freund dieser Dienste, machen sie mir es doch allzu schwer dort auf dem Laufenden zu bleiben.

[Update 19.01.2010] Es wird in naher Zukunft keine Fortsetzung dieser Reihe geben. Daß FriendFeed toll ist, hat sich auch Facebook gedacht und 2009 den Laden aufgekauft. Feeds haben sich überall im Web etabliert. Ich predige hier eh nur zum Chor.

Ich habe in den letzten 12 Monaten ein Verleihkonto bei Amazon gehabt und mir in dem Zusammenhang natürlich Filme ausgeliehen. Ob ich die dann auch ansehen konnte, steht auf einem anderen Blatt. Man kann das UN-DVD oder “Kopierschutz” nennen. Ich nenne es Abspielschutz. Ich war nun bei mehreren Filmen nicht in der Lage, diese mit meiner Technik zum laufen zu bekommen. Mit vielen Titeln ging irgend eine der folgenden Varianten:

• Direktes Abspielen unter Linux (mplayer, vlc und nach bedarf also mit dvdcss). Ist ja durch libdvdcss schon halblegal
• Abspielen auf dem Macbook mit dem Standard-DVD-Player von MacOS. Das Laufwerk im Macbook hat zum Glück ein paar mehr Filme vertragen als der NEC-Brenner im PC. Wenn ich die Nerven hatte, hab’ ich mir auch mit dem Macbook und dd ein Image gezogen um es dann unter Linux anzuschauen (hey, das teure 5.1 Dolby Digital Soundsystem hab ich mir doch nicht aus Spass gekauft)
• Falls beides nicht klappt: Versuch mit ddrescue an die Daten zu kommen
• Einmal hatte ich auch Windows gestartet und mit irgendeinem Tool (Alcohol 120?) was abspielbares von einer DVD zu bekommen

Jedenfalls – mein ursprüngliches Ziel — nämlich: “wenn ich einen Film entdecke, ab auf die Verleihliste und immer wenn ich Bock/Zeit habe mal nen Film reinlegen” funktioniert so nicht. Ich habe wirklich keinen Bock nach einem langen Arbeitstag noch am Rechner rumzufrickeln und eine DVD zum Abspielen zu bewegen. Eben habe ich das Verleihkonto gekündigt. Das waren etwa 9 Euro die pro Monat an Amazon gingen. Und es gab auch ein paar Monate, da lag die DVD nur herum und Amazon musste praktisch keine Leistung erbringen. Der Kündigungsgrund war leider keiner der Auswählbaren und einen Freitext gibts natürlich auch nicht.

Soviel zu meinem Versuch, für den Content “anständig” zu bezahlen und im Gegenzug Inhalte von anständiger Qualität zu bekommen.

Wenn ich jetzt etwas sehen will, werde ich mich ohne schlechtes Gewissen an die Bucht in Schweden wenden und den Content von dort Beziehen. Wenigstens kümmern sich Releasegroups auch darum, dass die Sachen abspielbar sind. Der Workflow ist der Verleih-DVD nicht unähnlich:

• Idee: Film X könnte toll sein
• T*rrent in den Client
• spätestens 3 Tage später ist der Film da.

Vorteile bei der Methode:

• der Inhalt ist abspielbar (beinhaltet also eben keinen Abspielschutz, Kopierschutz oder anderen Humbug)
• beim Abspielen werde ich nicht als Raubkopierer beschimpft

Die Logik entzieht sich mir nach-wie-vor: zahlende Kundschaft wie Feinde behandeln? Kann ich mir nicht leisten. Ich komme mir immer dumm vor wenn, nach 5 Minuten irgendwelcher Previews (nicht überspringbar), ich noch irgendeinen dämlichen Anti-Raubkopierer-Spot (nicht überspringbar) ertragen muss und dafür noch bezahlt zu haben. Das gilt analog natürlich auch für Kino (mehr Bezahlen, mehr Mist ertragen, mehr Dummvorkommen).

Weiter im Text. Daß ich von dem Material aus der Bucht dann natürlich eine Kopie behalten kann ist zwar nett, aber kein Must-Have. Sehr selten schaue ich mir irgendwas mehrfach an. Must-Have ist:

• Spielt tadellos ab
• Qualität der DVD ebenbürtig oder nur wenig darunter

Wenn man mit den Kriterien bei den Anbietern ein wenig “shoppen” geht sieht man das es “da draussen” keine Alternativen zur schwedischen Bucht gibt.

• Streaming aller art und couleur spielt nicht tadellos ab
• jegliche Lösung die nicht mit freier Software funktioniert spielt nicht tadellos ab

Zeigt mir jemand ein passendes Angebot?

Jedenfalls bin ich über das Tool cacls gestolpert, womit man die ACL von Verzeichnissen und Dateien bearbeiten kann. Fix mal die Permissions fuer den Ordner C:\WOPRO auf Benutzer:F gesetzt und schon kann der seine Datenbank schreiben und was-weis-ich noch in dem Verzeichnis machen. Das Programm startet jedenfalls erstmal ohne Fehlermeldung, mal sehn ob der Endbenutzer noch ein paar Fehler findet. Ich kann mir vorstellen dass beim Drucken evtl noch Probleme auftreten könnten. Nunja.

Der Hersteller bietet das Programm in der Form immer noch an, rät’ aber von einer Installation unter Vista ab. Für XP und 2000 wird das Programm angeboten, ohne Hinweis auf die eingeschränkten Nutzungsmöglichkeiten.

Sollte mich also (unabhängig von dieser Software hier) jemand nach irgendwelchen Empfehlungen im Softwarebereich fragen: Nur Software verwenden, die einwandfrei mit Eingeschränkten Benutzerkonten läuft. Unter Mac OS X und Linux ist das die Regel, unter Windows gibt es nach fast acht Jahren Windows XP (nutzbarer NT Kernel mit anständigen Treibern) in der Richtung immer noch viel zu tun. Und die ganzen Flickschusterer schimpfen auf Vista, weil dort deren Frickelware nicht läuft. Dabei liegt es doch eher an der kaputten Software die längst gefixt sein könnte (Microsoft hat gute Doku und mindestens seit XP auch entsprechende Best Practices).

Ach Mensch. Einmal mit Profis arbyten.

Allerdings kann ich auch wieder meckern: Der bloede Automat muesste wissen, dass es auf der gewaehlten Strecke keine “besseren” Verbindungen als die des Regionalverkehrs gibt (der Intercity wurde beim letzten Fahrplanwechsel eingestampft). Der Automat gaukelt mir vor, ich haette eine Wahl. Diese Wahl existiert auf der Strecke Dresden-Freiberg einfach nicht (Ha! Mit dem ICE von DD nach L und dann ueber C nach FG? LACH!). Jeder der die Strecke faehrt muss dort sinnloserweise einen Dialog beantworten, obwohl schon durch Auswahl des Zieles der Zugtyp hinreichend eingeschraenkt wurde. Naja.

Hier eine Zusammenfassung der Befürworter des Gesetzes aus meinem Wahlkreis (160) und dessen Listen (Sachsen):

• Andreas Lämmel (Direktkanditat, CDU)
• Rolf Schwanitz (SPD)
• Dr. Marlies Volkmer (SPD)
• Andreas Weigel (SPD)
• Simone Violka (SPD)

Entgegen der Fraktionslinie stimmte Wolfang Gunkel gegen den Gesetzentwurf. Er hat dazu auch Stellung bezogen.

Die Linke, ebenso FDP und Bündnis`90/Die Grünen haben den Gesetzentwurf geschlossen abgelehnt.

Ich bin zwar ein mac-user und hab’ auch einen ipod — also meine apple-toleranz ist ja schon vorhanden — aber mit dem iphone komm’ ich nicht mit.

Das Ding kann man nichtmal offiziell als modem via bluetooth verwenden. Wtf? Das hab ich ja schon mit meinem s55 gemacht — und mit dem uralt s25 von anno 2000 ging das bestimmt auch (ueber serielles kabel natuerlich). Java/J2ME? Scheinbar auch nicht. Hallo? Was fuer ein Witz. Was soll ich denn damit machen?

Ich denke nicht, dass z.B. die Bahn anfaengt, extra eine iPhone-Applikation zu entwickeln (der DB Railnavigator ist zwar nicht das schnellste Stueck Software aber es laeuft quasi ueberall und ist sehr brauchbar). Wird es ein TomTom fuers iPhone geben? Warum sollte ich Unsummen an Apple/T-Mobile rauswerfen um in eine solche Inselloesung einzusteigen?

Bin’ ich froh dass ich schon ein vernuenftiges Telefon hab.
